Grandma Jenny. Don’t you just love her already? I can’t imagine a “Grandma Jenny” being anything but kind, sweet, and good hearted with a love for children and family. That’s why when Andrea sent me a letter which included her Grandma Jenny’s recipe for her special chocolate chip cookies I knew I had to make them that very day. It was like finding treasure in my P.O. Box and I am proud to report that dear Grandma Jenny did not disappoint.

I emailed Andrea and asked if I could share her Grandma’s recipe with y’all and also asked that she tell me a little more about her. She quickly responded with the following story that really speaks to the heart of what a kind and loving woman her grandma was.

The last memory I have of my Grandma baking these cookies was when she was wheelchair bound. My mom had been staying with us (I lived with Grandma at the time), and Dad was coming to visit. Grandma wanted so badly to make cookies for her boy, but she wasn’t physically able to on her own. Mom helped her into the wheelchair and wheeled her in the kitchen so she could “help” make the cookies for my dad. Mom set the cookie sheets on the kitchen table so Grandma could drop the dough on the sheets before Mom put them in the oven for her.

I’m honored that Andrea has allowed me to bring you dear Grandma Jenny’s special cookie recipe today.

Grandma Jenny’s cookies have a special ingredient :Bread Flour. This keeps them soft and delicious. She also uses two different kinds of chocolate chips but you can just use one if you have that on hand (I’m sure Grandma Jenny would understand).

You”ll need: Bread Flour, Vanilla, Sugar, Brown Sugar, softened butter or margarine, Shortening, Egg, Baking Soda, Bit of Salt, and White Chocolate and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips.

Place your sugars, butter, and shortening in a mixing bowl.

Mix them up really well and add your egg and vanilla.

Then mix that up again until it looks like this.

Now add in your flour and baking soda.

and salt …

Mix it up again.

Add in your chocolate chips.

Spray your baking sheet with cooking spray.

yeah, its name brand but I had a coupon (waves at jenny from Southern Savers).

I’ve actually found that I like the nozzles better on the generic cooking spray.

Spoon your dough (I used tablespoon sized dollops) onto greased cookie sheets.

Thank you, Grandma Jenny. For sharing your love and your recipes. Andrea said she sure would be tickled if she had of seen this post about her but I feel confident we’re the lucky ones to get to read about her and sample the cookies she put so much love into.

1/3 cup shortening1/3 cup soft margarine½ cup brown sugar, packed½ cup sugar1 egg1½ cups BREAD flour½ teaspoon salt1 teaspoon vanilla½ teaspoon soda½ to 1 cup EACH milk chocolate and white chocolate chips (she always kept hers chilled in the freezer, but it works fine even if they’re not)

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix shortening, margarine, and sugars. Add in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour, salt and soda. Add chips. Drop onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until they just start to brown.

NOTE: Don’t try to substitute regular flour for bread flour because the cookies won’t turn out like Grandma Jenny’s. They run and flatten out to cookie “pancakes.” Oh, and unless you just really need a small batch, you might as well plan on making a double batch. One batch doesn’t go very far when you have a bunch of “cookie monsters” around!

If you want to make cookie “sandwiches,” this is the creme filling recipe:

Filling:

¾ cup shortening
3 cups powdered sugar
7 ounces marshmallow crème
1 to 3 Tablespoons milk

I only tried it with creme filling this last spring. The filling recipe is “borrowed” from the filling for Taste of Home’s “Oatmeal Sandwich Cookies.”

WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST NIGHT!

To celebrate my book’s debut, I planned a scavenger hunt around my hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. Here is the event announcement for more information:

MY BOOK DEBUTS TOMORROW AND I WANT TO CELEBRATE WITH YOU!
Beginning at 5:30, I will start visiting some area stores that are carrying my book. At each location, I’m going to be leaving invitations in the very front of the first four books and the top one will also have a special recipe card handwritten by someone in my family as a bonus (for the one who reaches that location first!).
After I leave each stop, I’ll post a photo of …me there and the location on facebook so folks can go try to get invitations. If you miss the ones at that location, check Facebook to see where I go next!
Each location will have four invites to a little get together that will take place at 7:00 PM. We’ll have refreshments, chat, and of course I’d be happy to sign your books or magazines if you bring them! (Like I say, my autograph and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee!)
This is going to be fun!
BUT you have to find an invitation to know where to go! Wanna go with friends? Bring ‘em along! All you need is one invite so you know where to find me at 7:00!

I ended up going to Wal Mart earlier in the day and while I was there went ahead and left some invites in their books.

Then got started at close to 5:30 when we took off looking for books. Sam’s Club had a huge table last week but were down to just a few last night so we left several invites in those books.

Oh, notice I say “We”? BIG thanks to Ashley Smith for meeting up with me ahead of time and traveling along to cut apart invitations and take photos! Ashley I can’t tell you how much I appreciated your help and you made the evening so much more fun for me!

This is what the invites looked like.

We went to Barnes And Noble on Bridge street. They had two books so I left invites in all of them.

We have three Books A Millions near me but only one of them had the books! From what I hear the other two had sold out and are expecting more in.

At the Books A Million on North Parkway I found a family waiting in their van for me!

They had waited over an hour!

This store had their Southern Plate books right up by the register so I stuck invites in all of them .

I’m doing a book signing here next Monday night.

And then the time came for us all to meet at the “secret” location on the invites. Which was of course, Krispy Kreme.

YES! They had the hot doughnuts sign on for us, too .

I left the house with my food lense on the camera so we had to do this photo in two parts…

I was thrilled with all of the kids who actually read Southern Plate!

Miss SaraBeth was just wonderful and she and I talked over all of our similarities, including our love of The Duggar Family!

I could talk to her Mama all day. Come to think of it, I could talk to everyone there all day! (and just about did)

This is me and Angel with the smiling eyes . She came to the UNA tailgate event as well and was so sweet to take part in my scavenger hunt, too!

This is Chris and Christine and little Christopher waiting to make his debut soon! They have the most beautiful love story. It was wonderful just being around these two and getting to see how much they adore each other as they wait on the arrival of their first born! I made Christine promise to post pics of baby feet on the Southern Plate Fanpage when he is born!

Lea Ann Smith waited at a Barnes and Noble for almost two hours for me to show up! I ended up not having time to get to that one but she was a WONDERFUL sport and I sent her clues and info on facebook so she could come join us. I’m so glad you came, Lea Ann!!! It was great getting to meet and hug you!

I went to middle school with Theresa and had not seen her since then!

Emily is the sweetest thing, just loved getting to meet her.

That guy I’m talking to there is Jason Porter. He and I were editors of the Literary Magazine in high school together

(he was senior editor, I was junior)

I had a good time getting to chat with everyone while the kids got to watch doughnuts being made. We ended up staying about two hours and don’t you know Krispy Kreme was wondering what on earth was going on!

XTC created the Dukes of Stratosphear almost on a lark, as an excuse to play the kind of music they grew up listening to and playing. The invention of the pseudonym gave them the opportunity to wear on their sleeves the influences they had only hinted at as XTC. The Dukes released two records between 1985 and 1987 and they are both compiled in their entirety on Chips from the Chocolate Fireball. Listening to Chips is like sifting through a '60s psychedelia bin at a good used record store. The only thing missing are the pops and crackles as you drop the needle onto the neglected vinyl. The best of the era is re-created here with reverence and an amazing attention to detail: Syd Barrett's childlike lyrics, the Blue Cheer fuzz-guitar frenzy, dissonant Sgt. Pepper strings and horns, and good old Brian Wilson-style indulgences.

The record opens with "25 O'Clock," which instantly recalls the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night." From there the references become more obscure: the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" is invoked by the bombastic guitar sludge of Sir John Johns (Andy Partridge) and Lord Cornelius Plum (Dave Gregory) on "My Love Explodes," while "Bike Ride to the Moon" is demented enough to have appeared on Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Other high points include the Hollies-inspired "Vanishing Girl" and the Beatles-style piano stomp "You're a Good Man Albert Brown." The record closes with the priceless "Pale and Precious." With its dead-on Wilson brothers harmonies and faux theremin, the song plays like an undiscovered gem from the Beach Boys' Smile sessions. --Paul Ducey

It has been a whirlwind week at my house but anyone visiting would hardly notice. Each morning has been us getting ready and everyone going off to school or work, each afternoon is filled with homework and after school snacks, and then watching our newly arrived tadpoles and speculating on when they’ll turn into frogs.

I usually work about ten hours a day on Southern Plate but I try to stick that in when the kids are at school or after they’ve gone to bed. This week has just been a little more frantic in it’s pace with all of the extra work getting ready to go on the road. A few folks have speculated on how my life must have changed by now but as I try to get the clothes out of the dryer before wrinkles have time to set in, I just have to chuckle at that. I’m the same person I’ve always been, I just have a lot more folks whom I claim as family now.

I want to thank you as sincerely as I can for being the best part of SouthernPlate.com for me and for all of your support with the book. We’ve done really well on sales the first week and the reviews are just so heartfelt and kind that I’m at a loss as to how to thank you for those. This week we stand a real chance of making the New York Times Bestseller list, whoda thunk it?

I’m not pinning my hopes on that, but I am pinning my hopes on being able to be a positive influence in the lives of others and I truly think that is what you and I are doing with Southern Plate. With so many stores selling out of the book. I am starting to feel like we are the “Little Book That Could” and again, I thank you so very much for giving me the ability to lend a voice to the things we all believe in and cherish.

If we do make the Bestsellers list next week, it will be entirely thanks to you and your efforts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful and thankful for all of this either way. My life is blessed and I count you as a big part of that. I’m not sure where this book is meant to go but I can tell you that two years ago when I started a little blog, I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be where I am today so I’m just gonna ride this out and see where it takes us.

Reading Christy Jordan’s new book is just like sitting down and talking to a close friend or family member. The recipes are wonderful (very similar to what I grew up eating) but it’s her stories that make this book come to life. She reminded me of how proud I am to be from the South. In the hustle and bustle of today: working, raising a child (& a husband!) it is SO easy to forget your past. And Christy is kind enough to remind us to slow down, take a breath, and appreciate what we have. I have never cried while reading a cookbook, but her story about her granddaddy is so similar to mine (and many others I am sure) that it just brought tears to my eyes. Oh, and did I mention the recipes are wonderful? If you are not southern (bless your heart!) now you can be! Just cook from this book! I have never met Christy, but I sure do feel like I have. And it’s SO nice to have a new friend.

You can cook with any cookbook, but with this one you feel like you are cooking with a friend in the kitchen with you. You can feel the love that the author put into this. I’m a Northerner who relocated to the west coast. =) I enjoy Southern food and love the recipes in this cookbook because of their simplicity and great taste. I have always enjoyed cooking, but would sometimes not make a certain dish because the recipe called for too many ingredients as well as spices I’ll hardly ever use again. I like to prepare good, wholesome food, that doesn’t break-the-bank to prepare. That’s exactly what I found in Southern Plate. Christy’s stories are so heartwarming and full of love. When you’re done reading about her family, you feel like you’ve known them all your life and can’t wait to sit down and share a meal. I’ve ordered a few copies of this book and can’t wait to give them to friends/family. I know this book with be a “go to” book for many years to come. Kudos to Christy for a job well done.

Strawberry Pretzel Salad, Chocolate Gravy, Seven Layer Salad and Banana Pudding…these are a few of my favorite Southern dishes. Unfortunately, I’m not one of those Southerners born with the cooking gene–you know, that inherent ability to whip up a dish from scratch (and from memory). Therefore, I also did not inherit the family recipes (those went to my sister, the cook). So when I get the urge to cook, I have to look up a recipe on the internet. But I never seem to find the authentic Southern version that I remember and want to re-create.

I think that Christy Jordan’s Southern Plate cookbook has solved my problems. She offers simple, straightforward recipes for all the dishes I’ve thoroughly enjoyed at family gatherings, backyard get-togethers, church picnics and potlucks. All of my favorites, all in one super-cute and extremely readable book. I ordered the book to support a fellow University of North Alabama graduate, not knowing exactly what I’d find inside. What a wonderful surprise! Recipes with two, three or four ingredients (yay!), easy mixes to give as gifts (this section was an added bonus), and lots of alternatives and suggestions for reducing the fat or sugar in the dishes.

I can’t wait to cook something this week! Thanks, Christy…and congratulations on a job well done!

I just opened my recipe book about an hour ago and have been immersed in the stories and recipes, which are so much like what I knew growing up. I didn’t realize that I had preordered two different times so I got two copies. But that’s great; my daughter’s birthday is Saturday and guess what I’m giving her? Her own copy of Christy’s cookbook!! I have already tried some of her recipes from her web site and can’t wait to try even more of them. I have followed Christy’s blog for a long time. I found her site when I was searching for a recipe for sweet tea, which I’d never made. Her recipe was SO easy, and tastes incredible! That same day, I made her strawberry pie, which was as easy as, well, pie. Christy can’t be topped. Her recipes are ideal for “regular” cooks like me, who are cooking for families on a budget, trying to satisfy picky eaters, and trying to make great food around time constraints.

Christy has a way of explaining things that make it SO easy to follow her recipes. I am a pretty good cook, and I enjoy trying new recipes with varying levels of difficulty. Some cookbooks just don’t guide you through some of the more challenging steps or the directions are unclear, and I waste time standing there trying to interpret what they mean. But reading and preparing Christy’s recipes is like having a good friend standing by you, guiding you through and cheering you on as you go.

I will also be getting a copy for my daughter, as she’s just “out of the nest” and learning to cook on her own. Since I can’t be there myself to help her cook, I’m going to send Christy’s book as my “proxy”, and that’s the next best thing to being there!

Thank you, Christy, for helping me feed my family good food that they like easily, quickly, inexpensively, and with love!

I’ve been a huge fan of Christy and Southernplate.com for a while now. I’ve never been what I’d consider a good cook. I still get teased for setting my parents’ kitchen on fire when I was a teenager. Thanks to Christy though I’ve not only blossomed in the kitchen, I’ve achieved “oh my gosh this is better than Mam Mom’s status (which is quite a lofty honor I assure you). I’ve got a whole shelf full of cookbooks but I assure you – I might as well give those away – Southern Plate is my one stop go to. You won’t find a cook book with better tasting recipes that are still easy to make and don’t have ridiculous ingredients lists. Added bonus – Christy has an amazing story for all of her recipes and really embodies the true spirit of what cooking is about – the love for your family. LOVE love this book. Don’t just buy one – go ahead and buy several for the ones you love, because believe me – once you cook from this book they’re all going to want these recipes anyway!!

Some weeks back my better half mentioned Christy’s new book and I made a mental note of it and secretly pre-ordered it for her birthday on October 18th. After I ordered it she was constantly talking about it and when it finally became available in stores I was so sure that she was going to rush out and buy it, I had to tell her I had already ordered it.
Well, yesterday it arrived in a box from Amazon and my wife (Chris) saw the box and was so excited I had to let her open it early.
That’s about the last I’ve seen of her. She sits across the room with her face buried in the book and occasionally reads a recipe to me and tells me how delicious it looks. She came in from work today and had the book in her bag and took it out and her face immediately disappeared into the book again. I’ve considered putting out an Amber Alert! Meanwhile I was left on my own to cook whatever I could manage. So, I’m sitting here eating a cheeseburger while my wife is describing these wonderful dishes!

Have your kitchen well stocked with staples before reading this book! You’ll want to run to the kitchen and cook these delicious dishes. The food is simple yet flavorful. There are no ingredients that have to be ordered or bought at specialty stores. Everything is readily available at your local store.

As a cookbook collector I have books from all areas of the U.S. Being a southern girl, born and bred,(thank God) southern cookbooks are my favorites. Southern Plate tops my list! The stories included with the recipes are heartwarming. The photography is beautiful. From sweet potato casserole to collard greens, from chocolate gravy to chicken and dumplins, this book features them all. It also includes giftable dishes for the holidays.

Apparently, he was always cooked the meat first then htrhcti and dried out before getting this pan pot for rice and cooking is next.Well, this fateful day that I had a brilliant idea!

What if it is cooked beef AND rice cooker in Frypan and FRY AT the same TIME!?

Like this idea that is innovative, beat me to the kitchen has been "reads a baby come here! You are not going to believe this! " I went into the kitchen half expect to see the image of Jesus on his toast by the sound of his voice only to find him smiling like a kid at school from the oven as it declared "I'm cooking at the same time!"

Had to wonder if he thought we started cooking dinner in our first thing in the morning to do it by the time dinner all but didn't say anything. "instead, I congratulated him on his new found skill, I went to the bedroom, and called mother to tell her.

Still we get and grin at outside that today my experience that a broad repertoire of Ricky cooking beyond PB-J and rice visit, here are some slow cooker recipes I was trying to teach it.

Family Adventure Days began when my husband and I realized that while we were all together at home on the weekends, we weren’t actually tuning into each other as a family. With the temptations of video games, tv, and the internet at home, we decided to set aside one day each weekend that we are able to leave the house and get out and have some fun together as a family. This began last September and has been the best thing that ever happened to the Jordans!

Alright so this family adventure day is a little different for us because it is missing a key person but has eight additional ones in his place! Ricky (the daddy in our family) was at work when my mother called and asked if Brady, Katy, and I wanted to come with her and my other Auntlings to Tate Farms in Huntsville, Alabama. The kids were on fall break and I had a TON of work to do with Southern Plate and trying to get ready for the first big leg of my book tour (click here to see where I’m traveling this week). but you know what? A chance for my kids to spend the day with their cousins and grandmother just can’t be passed up so I put ye olde “to do” list on the back burner and we headed out.

As you can see, the entire day was just one big old photo op amidst the fun!

We had eight kids with us and by this time my sister, Patti, joined us too.

I told Mama I felt like we were the Duggars!

Speaking of the Duggars. This is SaraBeth.

I got to meet her during the Southern Plate Scavenger Hunt and we had a great time getting to chat.

Turns out we are both big fans of the Duggars tv show! ~waves to SaraBeth~

She told me she is a big fan of Southern Plate and after meeting her, I’m now a big fan of SaraBeth!

I LOVE this one. If you look real close you can see little Elle peeping out from the cotton!

Then to the corn cribs to play! This is always a favorite of the kids.

Lane is smiling up on the left here. He is still reveling in the glory of guest blogging Honeybun Cake on Southern Plate a while back!

These kids think it’s really something to be on here and I am happy to accommodate!

You know, that’s the thing. Kid are so easily thrilled with the smallest things and it is so much fun to make them feel good!

This is also the trailer that is pulled by the tractor that covers you in a thick layer of red dust if it hasn’t rained in a while.

Then you scatter to the winds on the hunt for the perfect pumpkin!

And this is a picture we’ll always cherish.

I got pumpkin sitting duty as the kids took some time on the big farm playground.

This is really a neat place, lots of fun. You could easily spend the whole day here and never get bored. As it was we were here a few hours and were exhausted when we left!

Go to your nearest grocery store, talk it up on the way and let your kids pick out the perfect pumpkin! Take photos of the entire process to help make more of an event out of it. Afterward, take them out for ice cream, dessert, or even smoothies. Take photos of that, too! Bring the pumpkins home and let your kids draw faces on them with permanent markers. Be sure to photograph them with the finished pumpkin to instill pride in their job well done.

The key to a wonderful Family Adventure day is not about spending a lot of money or filling your day with amusement park type attractions, it’s in setting aside special time, declaring it special time, and spending it with each other as a family.

Thanks to my husband for recording the Southern Plate Tailgating Cooking Show this past week at UNA. We divided it up into segments lasting a few minutes long each so you can start and stop as you have time. I cannot tell you how much fun I had! This was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. I’d never been on a stage with a mic and I was worried I might get nervous but let me tell you, I walked out onto that stage with my Southern Plate family in the audience and I was instantly at home. I could do that every night and be happy!
